What a tenacious fellow, working for five days to bury this carcass. This 11 kilogram badger buried 23 kilogram calf carcass to protect it from predators. Like our pet dogs with their bones, the badger used his underground “refrigerator” to store this meat so he could consume it over a period of time.

Many of my nutrition clients are initially confused about what exactly the ingredients in their dog’s food are made from. One set of ingredients that are particularly confusing are meat meal, animal byproduct meal, or poultry meal. Each of these “meals” are produced from either mammals such as cattle, goat, sheep, pig or other mammals or poultry like chicken or turkey. Depending on the “meal” type, it contains different parts of the animal’s carcass.

I have been on holidays for the past ten days. I am very fortunate that in my family we “pet sit” for each other when we go on holidays. As I was writing the list of things to do for Mum, I realised how, as our dogs age, their eccentricities become more pronounced. Here are some tips I use to encourage my old dog to eat.
