How Can I Keep My Dog Safe and Happy This Summer?
24 Jul, 2017
Our mission at Full Stride Canine Myofunctional Therapy and Nutrition is to keep dogs healthy and active well into their senior years. We combine our massage and nutritional expertise to help dogs recovering from injury or surgery, keep older dogs strong and active, and maintain the overall good health of all dogs to reduce the risk of injury and disease.
Finding safe ways to enjoy your time with your senior dog is particularly important in summer, with all the opportunities for play that the season brings.
Walking at Dawn
I was recently asked for my advice for the BUPA Pet Insurance on ways to enjoy ‘Fun Things to Do with Your Dog This Summer’. A walk through the bush at dawn is a relaxing experience for you and your dog if you head out before the weather gets too hot. It’s advisable to keep your dog on a long lead, so they can wander and explore all the new sights and smells of the area without going too far away from you. A harness can also be a good idea, so your dog’s neck and shoulders will not be injured or impeded.
Fun in the Water on the Beach
Walking through the water on the beach is another peaceful and fun activity for you and your dog to enjoy together. Your dog can run in and out of the water, chasing waves and small fish, and it’s a great conditioning and strengthening exercise, particularly for older dogs. Early morning or late afternoon are the best times to head out, as it’s not so hot.
Keep Your Dog’s Muscles Warm and Conditioned
Just like humans, dogs’ muscles need to warm up before any physical activity. Five to ten minutes of walking, mixed with short bursts of jogging, and some gentle stretches, can reduce the risk of injury and muscle soreness.
Make sure your dog is adequately conditioned for the activity they’re performing. If your dog has been sat inside for a long period of time, they shouldn’t be exposed to a strenuous run straight away. Instead build up to it gradually, otherwise the risks of injury and overexertion are high.
Following these tips can make a big difference to your dog’s health and strength this summer, enabling you both to have much more fun together for a long time to come.
